After several years in development, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled to hit theatres in the spring of 2019 and continue the legend of DC’s superpowered Found Family. There are still several plot strands from the first Shazam! that haven’t been fully explored, such as the post-credits sting introducing Mr. Mime, despite the teasers and trailers for the movie hinting at some innovative explorations of the magical mythos. Director David F. Sandberg recently answered questions on his Instagram page, and he confirmed that Mr. Mind won’t be in the follow-up because it would have been “too much movie” to include him.

Shazam! In the movie Fury of the Gods, Asher Angel and Zachary Levi play Billy Batson and Shazam!, respectively. Grace Fulton portrays Mary Bromfield, and the other cast members include Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Ross Butler as Eugene, Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena, D.J. Cotrona as Pedro, Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez, and Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez. Other new cast members include Lucy Liu as Kalypso, Helen Mirren as Hespera, and Rachel Zegler in an unspecified role.
In an interview with Collider earlier this year, producer Peter Safran said, “I loved the original Shazam movie. The eye of the needle was so small to get it right, but David Sandberg really did nail it. I feel like this second one has more emotion, more humour, but it also has bigger action, bigger set pieces, and some great villains. I just feel like it’s everything we loved in the first movie but really turned up to 11. So I love it.
It’s a great addition, in my opinion, to have some of these new characters like Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren, and Lucy Liu, said Safran. “I adore that the children are all a little bit older now so we can have a little bit more fun with them in a slightly more edgy way. That character is so beautifully embodied by Zach. It’s exciting to have been able to create another one of those.”
